Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), seeks an outstanding faculty member for an Assistant Professor, nine-month tenure-track position in the School’s Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) degree program.
The successful applicant will demonstrate contemporary expertise in one or more of the following professional domains of athletic training:
- Urgent and emergent care
- Orthopedics
- Rehabilitation
- Behavioral health
- Wellness and/or performance enhancement
Administrative responsibilities in the roles of program director or clinical education coordinator may be available in the future. Further, the successful candidate will be able to mentor graduate students through capstone projects, conduct research, publish scholarly manuscripts, apply for, and receive internal and external grant funding, and provide community engagement and professional service.
This appointment begins August 2023.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants must possess the following qualifications:
- Candidate must hold an earned Doctorate degree in Athletic Training or a closely related field at the time of employment. ABD applicants will be considered for this position and must have earned a degree by August 1, 2023.
- Candidate must hold current Board of Certification as an Athletic Trainer (in good standing) and possess or be eligible to obtain licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the State of North Carolina.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Preference will be given to candidates who have the following:
- Previous teaching experience at the university level, as the instructor of record within a CAATE-accredited program
- An established record of or demonstrated potential for research and scholarly activity in athletic training or allied health field
- A minimum of 3 years clinical experience as a certified athletic trainer
- Experience serving as a clinical preceptor
- Demonstrated ability to mentor student research
- Experience developing and maintaining collaborative relations with campus constituents and off-campus clinical sites and a successful record of community service and engagement
- An established record of or demonstrated potential for successful academic leadership
- Experience with CAATE accreditation processes
- A commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) prepares entry level professionals to enter the field of Athletic Training. The degree is built around 60 credit hours of required coursework to satisfy the eligibility requirements for the students to sit for the national Board of Certification examination. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), most recently in 2018. Graduates from the program establish successful careers as Athletic Trainers in secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional sports programs, sports medicine clinics, and other athletic health care settings. The SHAHS is also home to the WPA/L 101 Physical Activity and Wellness program which delivers courses that fulfill University Studies requirements.
The MSAT program and the SHAHS is located in the newly constructed Veterans Hall (https://uncw.edu/chhs/veteranshall/index.html). The MSAT program is the main user of the state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Lab.
