Department Description:
The Information Security & Identity Management division manages the University’s Information Security Office and Identity Management. The Security Office is responsible for coordinating and ensuring that information security across the University is consistent with industry best practices and the University’s compliance obligations. Identity Management (IdM) identifies individuals within an enterprise or group and defines and controls the access they have to information and resources within a computer network based on their roles and circumstances.

Position Description:
This position is a 100% remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
(The position participates in shared group responsibilities including an on-call rotation, incident escalations, as well as group telephone, incident tickets, and email response duties.)
Information Security Architecture and Cloud Services
The Information Security Specialist is a technical contributor who understands both enterprise systems and public clouds. The position will focus on systems used by and/or operated by Information Technology Services. However, this position also works with departmental and University business units to assist with implementation policies, procedures, processes, controls, and methods needed to design and implement optimal enterprise information security architectures for on-premises and public clouds to ensure that the University’s information resources are appropriately protected based on risk. The position will also identify opportunities to alter or improve procedures, processes, controls, and methods to protect important data managed by the University.
Primary duties include:
This position will support design, consulting, and implementation of security architecture, cloud services, and administers the following functions under the direction of the Information Security Operations Manager and in support of the Chief Information Security Officer’s goals. Scope of duties includes providing planning, project management, consulting along with the following primary functions:
- Consulting, research, and technical knowledge for enterprise information security architecture, including security for public cloud workloads.
- Occasional presentations and proposals for IT leadership, customers, office staff, information security programs, and internal knowledge sharing via documentation and article in our knowledge base.
- Creation and maintenance of diagrams and supporting technical documentation.
- Development of internal process, procedure and workflow enhancements for the office and other groups within Information Technology Services.
- Collaborates with subject matter experts and team leads in other units.
- Support of internal security projects and processes.
- Occasional On-Call Support: ticket escalations and provide responsive 24-7-365 on-call operational support for mission critical systems, resources, urgent time sensitive matters, and the University’s sensitive information.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Demonstrated experience with information technology.
Education Requirements:
Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Two years of professional experience in information technology
- Professional experience providing information security services or information security functions
- Professional experience collaborating directly with information security architects, network architects, systems architects, managers, or developers
- Professional experience in higher education or an organization with over 500 employees
- Information security training and/or certification(s)
- Experience with or knowledge of security controls for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS)
- Knowledge of enterprise systems
