Computer Support Technician 1
JOB SUMMARY
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Shared Services Office at the University of Connecticut seeks qualified applicants for the position of Computer Support Technician 1 for CLAS Shared Services Information Technology. Under the direction of the CLAS Director of IT and senior team members, the candidate will provide IT support for the College primarily within the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology, including support for computers, hardware, software, printers, mobile devices, A/V, networking, web applications, and research. Tasks include hardware and software installation, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and integration.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyzes, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs computer software, hardware, and network problems for a variety of computer users.
- Uses various software and hardware tools and installs software and/or hardware.
- Tracks and documents work and projects for internal knowledge base, lessons learned, consistency, and excellence of service as well as team-collaboration purposes.
- Carries out small- to moderately-sized technical tasks with minimal assistance and writes summaries of technical project work.
- Responds to inquiries from other departments and collaborates with external departments.
- Supports the development of plans and processes that minimize risk to services or systems due to errors.
- Supports technical projects, as part of a project team.
- Images and deploys computers with data, software, settings, and preferences transfers.
- Assists researchers with technology in labs.
- Supports the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of University information as part of the overall University Information Security Program.
- Communicates with non-technical end users in a professional way.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
- Two or more years of related experience in computer programming, computer technical support, computer consulting, or computer operations.
- Thorough understanding of computer hardware, software, peripherals, and standard operating systems.
- Understanding of ethernet, Wi-Fi, and IP networks and protocols in general.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and related software applications.
- Knowledge of personal device configuration.
- Experience with personal device management.
- Experience with printer setup and maintenance.
- Experience with file services.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to handle non-trivial technical problems or other IT-related tasks while potentially under stress or with time constraints.
- Ability to work well with minimal supervision.
- Ability to tolerate dust exposure and to lift 50 pounds.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Technical certification by CompTIA, Microsoft, Apple, etc.
- Experience with hardware maintenance and/or repair.
- Experience with MDT, SCCM, or Intune/Autopilot.
- Demonstrated knowledge and use of Active Directory Administration.
- Experience in a formal tech support role.
- Experience with electronic components.
- Experience in a research environment with research equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to create and/or follow complex plans and strategies.
- Experience writing or adapting scripts or computer code.
- Ability to work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time position. The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's background and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
