Associate Dean of Students

 

Description of Department:

 

SUNY Oswego's https://ww1.oswego.edu/dean-students/ is a central resource that serves the needs of all students in collaboration with faculty and staff. We provide critical resources, programs and services designed to support students, their well-being, and help students overcome challenges and remove barriers to their success. The ODS staff members empower students to advocate for themselves and access the resources necessary to achieve academic, professional, and personal growth.

 

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students, this position will play an integral role within the Office of the Dean of Students increasing learning, persistence, and graduation by providing case management and crisis response to support all students. ODS, situated within the Division of Student Affairs, seeks to provide a welcoming, accessible, and affirming environment for all SUNY Oswego students so that they can achieve their full potential as students and as graduates.

 

The Associate Dean of Students (ADOS), serves as a champion for the student experience and a facilitator of SUNY Oswego's culture and network of care. The ADOS serves as a resource and advocate for students providing oversight for all case management functions within the Office of the Dean of Students. This includes supporting the basic needs of students as well as supporting students encountering disruptions. The position provides services that promote the personal development, health and well-being, and academic success of all undergraduate and graduate students at SUNY Oswego in Oswego and at the Syracuse Campus. This position supports and advocates for students who are experiencing crises and intervenes directly to provide guidance and support to students, families, faculty, and staff.

Description of Responsibilities:

 

  • Serve as a member of the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Team and work to align the goals, priorities, and learning outcomes of the Office of the Dean of Students with the mission, vision, values, and student learning outcomes of the Division and Institutional priorities.
  • Support department assessment and planning and use assessment data to inform programs, practice, and protocols for continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership and vision for case management and well-being areas in the Office of the Dean of Students.
  • Supervise four professional staff members; Assistant Dean of Students for Well-being, Assistant Dean of Students for Alcohol and Drug Education, Assistant Dean of Students for Student Outreach and Support, and Assistant Dean of Students - Basic Needs Case Manager.
  • Oversee case management functions within the Office of the Dean of Students, ensuring response to students encountering disruptions due to personal or academic challenges.
  • Provide case management support and general advocacy for students including coordination and oversight of the out-of-class notice process as well as the University Withdrawal and Leave of Absence processes.
  • Support the DOS in responding to small- and large-scale crises. Represent the DOS as the departmental leader for crisis response as directed. Occasionally serve as on-call representative for the Office of the Dean of Students in the absence of the DOS.
  • Oversee basic needs programs and services including the distribution of the Student Emergency Fund, University food and clothing pantry (SHOP), and the Homeless Liaison position.
  • Provide leadership in developing services and programs that promote the personal development, health and well-being, and academic success of all undergraduate and graduate students at SUNY Oswego.
  • Collaborate within the Division and in conjunction with campus partners to develop programs and services to respond to the needs of marginalized student populations and support an inclusive and welcoming university community.
  • Represents the Office of the Dean of Students to various institutional divisions, committees, students and their parents, and/or the general public.
  • Serve as a resource to university faculty and staff in dealing with students' disruptive behavior within and outside of the classroom.
  • Support efforts in the Office of the Dean of Students to ensure University compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements as they relate to Clery, FERPA and related state and federal laws and regulations. Oversee University compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Community Act.
  • Ensure all staff have access to tools and information on laws, guidelines, policies, and procedures, as well as actively participate in opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Serve on the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT), charged with policy and systems development and real-time response to critical incidents and student emergencies.
  • Chair case management committee charged with supporting students.
  • Serve as a Student Conduct hearing officer as Dean's designee or Code Administrator as needed.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and departments to provide additional learning opportunities and partnerships that enhance the student experience.
  • Serve as key advisor to the Dean of Students on departmental initiatives and student issues and stand in for the Dean of Students during their absence.
  • Serve and participate on Division and University committees, as assigned or designated.
  • Participate in Student Affairs division activities and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Master's Degree in education, counseling, social work, public health, or a related field
  • 5 years of experience in Higher Education or related field
  • Experience working with a diverse student body and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership and managerial skills and the capacity to supervise and lead staff
  • Familiarity with student conduct process and policy development as related
  • Excellent writing oral presentation skills and organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FERPA and Clery Act Compliance

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Doctorate degree in Higher Education
  • Progressive leadership experience in Student Affairs
