Medical Assistant for Squaxin Island Tribe Health Clinic.
SUMMARY:
Assists medical staff in providing medical care to the patients of the Squaxin Island Health Center. Performs functions entitled of Washington State Category A, C, and E Certified Health Care Assistant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Other duties may be assigned)
Obtains and initially prepares patients medical record. Assists patients into examination rooms.
Determines reason for client visit and obtains patients’ vital signs, clearly and accurately recording this information into patients’ medical records.
Upon determining nature of condition, may institute various diagnostics testing modalities in accordance with standing orders and clinic policy, recording this information into the medical record.
Presents the medical record and explanation of patients’ presence and condition to the clinic nurse, physician or physician assistant as indicated.
Maintains a physical presence for chaperone and assistance purposes in exam room while all non-same sex physical examinations and consultations are performed.
Schedules patients for external to clinic diagnostic testing and other medical provider referrals as requested by medical provider.
Transmits orders for medications as requested by medical provider.
Interfaces with Purchased Referred Care Program to obtain purchase orders for eligible recipients.
Triage care and facilitates good communication with patient population by answering and returning phone calls after conferring with medical provider to limit patient inconvenience.
Prepares laboratory specimens for transport to lab and executes those tests done in clinic. Ability to draw blood and give vaccinations.
Clears and appropriately cleans exam rooms after each patient visit and restocks consumable supplies.
Assists clinic nurse with maintaining adequate supply of medical appliances, consumable supplies, medications and forms.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
One academic year of formal Health Care Assistant education at the post secondary level. Education shall include but not be limited anatomy, physiology, pharmacological principals, and medication administration, concepts of asepsis, and microbiology. Health Care Assistance experience beyond externship preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Must be proficient and accurate in medical mathematics.
REASONING ABILITY:
Must understand the ethical implications and patient confidentiality issues involved in this line of work. Must understand and accept their relationship to patients and other licensed health care practitioners. Must understand that their health care services take place in a professional, warm, friendly, non-biased environment. Must have the ability to work with and relate to individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds.
Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written, oral or diagram form. Must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must be Washington State Certified Health Care Assistant, Category A, C, and E. Must have valid Washington State Driver’s License.

The individual may also have to frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift 50 – 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level for this work environment is generally moderate. Individual may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals or electrical shock. Safety requirements include the handling of infections disease cases and the handling and disposal of bio-hazardous materials.
