DESCRIPTION:

This position performs varied administrative and clerical support work for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.  Work is procedural in nature and involves different and unrelated moderately complex processes and methods. If the position is assigned to the Corrections Bureau, work is performed within the confined area of a maximum security correctional and detention facility and may involve exposure to an inmate population.

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare a variety of routine material and correspondence from written material and recording; proofread and ensure correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization on department correspondence.
  • Organize, maintain and retrieve information and documents from files and records.
  • Process requisitions, vouchers and invoices; validate payments and place orders for department.
  • Perform timekeeping functions for work unit or department; complete time records; compute time; maintain leave status records and monitor leave balances.
  • Maintain simple bookkeeping, financial and statistical records requiring some technical accounting knowledge; receive and receipt various payments, fees and fines; makes proper distribution and record entries, or code incoming material for further processing.
  • Perform receptionist and general office duties; respond to routine inquiries by telephone or person-to-person; fulfill requests for publications or office supplies.
  • Take minutes at meetings. Operate standard office equipment such as copiers, typewriters, personal computers or word processors, postage machines, calculators and recorders. May verify, code and proofread input and output data.
  • Assist in specially assigned data searches to develop or recover information from non-standard sources.  Assist in the compilation and evaluation of data to meet defined objectives.
  • Receive and process routine to moderately complex forms and applications, i.e., determines regulatory or procedural compliance; computes or verifies data, fees or payments; assists in the proper completion of forms or documents; and researches governing directives to answer questions and resolve routine problems encountered.  May also provide information and advice in response to questions raised by the public served.
  • May assist in the training other clerical staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, employees and the general public.
  • Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite.
  • Meet travel requirements of the position.
  • Perform the physical requirements of the position; work within the established working conditions of the position.
  • Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

  • One year of general clerical work experience.  Additional education or related experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate is required. 
  • Age eighteen (18) at time of appointment.
  • United States citizenship or lawful permanent resident and the ability to read and write the English language as required by RCW 41.14.100. 
  • Ability to pass required Civil Service examination. 
  • Ability to successfully complete Pierce County Sheriff's Department background investigation, which may include a behavioral assessment and/or polygraph. 

 

EXAMINATION PROCESS:

  • The written examination is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 2019.  There are no alternate test dates.
  • After the closing date, qualified applicants will receive an email invitation to the written examination which will include the time, location and important details. 
  • Individuals attaining a passing score of 70% or higher on the Office Assistant 2 written examination will be placed on the Civil Service register in order of final score. 
  • A Civil Service register will be established and ranked according to the written examination score.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department - Standards on Illegal Drug Possession 
*No marijuana use since the register is certified; and 
*Any marijuana use must not have exceeded twenty-five (25) times in the past two (2) years; and 
*No use of all other illegal drugs within the past three (3) years; and 
*Any use of all other illegal drugs must not have exceeded four (4) times total in the past ten (10) years; and 
*No use of illegal drugs by free-basing or needle injection (excluding steroids); and 
*No illegal use of steroids within three (3) years; and 
**No cultivation, manufacture, production, distribution, transportation of marijuana for profit or pattern of criminal behavior for five (5) years; and; 
*No cultivation, manufacture, production, distribution, transportation of all other illegal drugs for profit or pattern of criminal behavior for ten (10) years; and 
*Prescription drug misuse will be looked at on a case by case basis. 

It is understood that many candidates have experimented on a limited basis with illegal controlled substances in their past, and this behavior may not be an accurate indication of future performance with PCSD. Possession of any controlled substance outside the above standard, that occurred more than ten (10) years prior to applying, will be considered, upon request of the candidate.

*No non-traffic misdemeanor convictions within three (3) years;

*No Criminal Driving Convictions within 36 months preceding the date of this application.
