Job Description
The Senior Hardware Engineer position is within the Engineering team in Roanoke, VA. The position will focus on electronic design and product testing/evaluation but will also involve broad engineering support in areas like generator and battery storage integration. The position will many areas of hardware design, testing, integration, and research. The Senior Hardware Engineer will report to the VP of Hardware and Firmware.
Responsibilities
Hardware Technology Development
- Design of complex monitoring and control products and systems including integration of electronic, electromechanical, wiring, and packaging components
- Electronic hardware design, development, and testing, including all phases from prototype creation through final production designs
- Complex detailed electronic design including component evaluation and selection, circuit design, and board layout
- Project management to coordinate the efforts of various disciplines and oversee moderately complex projects from concept through long-term support of in-service systems
- Gather product/system requirements from various internal and external stakeholders
- Prepare engineering specifications, cost estimates, project schedules and documentation
- Conduct design reviews
- Validation and system integration testing including develop of test standards
- Manufacturing startup
- Engineering documentation and configuration management
- Support Supply Chain Management in product cost reduction efforts
Quality Control
- Design/ construct factory testers
- Work with contract manufacturer to improve product manufacturability
- Evaluate and diagnose failed products from manufacturer
- Evaluate and diagnose failed products returned from the field
- Identify substitutes as components become end-of-life
Solutions Development
- Research/ evaluate various battery storage technology, define integration and application within the GridPoint system
- Research/ evaluate various automatic transfer switch (ATS) technology used within generator applications, define integration and application within the GridPoint system
- Work with internal and external parties on battery storage and generator integration installation projects
Ongoing Support of Products and Systems
- Engineering support of in-service systems, including onsite test
- Technical interface to customers, contract manufacturers, and other parties
Other
- Assist with training and professional development of other employees as assigned
- Carry out other technology and business support as may be assigned by the position manager
- 15% travel
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE)
Experience
- Ten years performing embedded hardware development
- Proficient in mixed-signal hardware design
- Proficient in circuit design / PCB layout for low emissions
- Experience with PIC microcontrollers and ARM microprocessors preferred
- Understanding of electronic product packaging – mechanical
- Knowledgeable in developing equipment to meet international standards such as CE
- Strong understanding of New Product Introduction processes
- Strong understanding of Quality Control processes
- Knowledgeable in control systems theory and digital signal processing a plus
- Knowledgeable in HVAC equipment such as Trane, Carrier, Lennox controls a plus
- Experience with C programming a plus
- Knowledgeable in commercial electrical systems a plus
- Knowledgeable in generator and ATS technology a plus
- Knowledgeable in battery storage systems a plus
