About the Position:
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications provides strategic and active management of all marketing and communication functions for University Life’s Student Involvement Unit (SI). This position is comprised of several main components: 1) Execution of marketing needs for SI including brand management; campaigns; development and execution of calendars (marketing, communication and social media); project coordination; design and production of printed and web-based visual identity pieces; management of social media presence; and design of websites; 2) Supervision of student design support team 3) Establishment of strong relationship with key stakeholders and an in depth understanding of communication and marketing needs both at the unit level and divisionally. This position will sit on a team of marketing and communications professionals and report to the Director of Communications and Marketing, University Life with a dotted line to the Associate Director of Student Involvement for Campus Events and Promotions.

Responsibilities:
Marketing and Branding
- Creation, planning and execution of a comprehensive integrated department-wide marketing/branding plan with measurable results and promotion strategies targeted at the maximum reach of our stakeholders;
- Responsible for the marketing and promotion of SI programs, services, and involvement opportunities;
- Coordinate outreach efforts (i.e., tabling, events, etc.) to market SI and our opportunities to students, faculty, staff, and the Mason community;
- Provide leadership and direction of all unit marketing and branding initiatives to align SI, University Life, and Marketing and Communications with branding strategic plans;
- Serve on various division-wide committees including: University Life Branding and Marketing Committee, Marketing and Communications Committee, etc.;
- Assist with management of SI marketing budget;
- Supervise the SI Graphic Design team (i.e., three students majoring in graphic design); and
- Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing training program for staff members as needed; advise staff and students regarding programs and techniques needed to increase participation and best practices in cross-marketing of events.
Social Media and Web Site Management
- Partner with team web designer to develop updated design and plan for unit web sites;
- Responsible for updates and maintenance to all SI Web sites; and
- Management of social media presence and implementations of a social media plan.
Sponsorship and Revenue-Generation
- Development and management of sponsorship initiatives for programs, such as Mason Day, Welcome Week, and Homecoming.
Media Relations
- Increase overall press coverage of SI programs and initiatives by writing press releases, and articles for internal newspapers and media outlets including print and online.
Supervision of Student Employees
- This position may have responsibility in the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of student interns and/or paid student positions (student street team) that assist in the overall marketing plan for departmental goals.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Professional experience (typically obtained in 2-3 years) in graphic design, marketing, or related field;
- Demonstrated experience with and skill in graphic design, including Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and/or other design programs;
- Experience with content management systems and employing content strategy for the purpose of maintaining organization’s web site (WordPress and html coding experience preferred);
- Demonstrated knowledge of social media management and implementation (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite, etc.);
- Demonstrated, effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; the qualified candidate will have highly developed organizational management and problem-solving skills, and must work accurately and efficiently in order to meet a multitude of deadlines and responsibilities;
- The ability to work well in a team environment is required; and
- Candidates must have a commitment to diversity and ability to work effectively and respectfully within diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience marketing large events;
- Experience managing teams and multiple projects; and
- Demonstrated experience with project management platforms.
