Position Summary:
The University of Idaho seeks an expert in apparel and textiles design and construction to join the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The position is a full-time, 9-month position with 85% teaching and advising, 10% outreach, and 5% university service and leadership expectations.
This is an instructor position with responsibilities focused on teaching undergraduate related to applied studio and laboratory courses in apparel and textiles design, construction, and repair. This individual will also develop and implement outreach activities focused on teaching basic clothing construction and repair to local, regional, and state stakeholders including but not limited to 4-H participants and other school-age children, U of I students (e.g., sorority and fraternity members), and FCS educators. As appropriate, this position will also provide service to the university, region, state, appropriate professional organizations, and the Idaho apparel industry.
Teaching & Advising: Teach apparel product development courses including but not limited to apparel production and assembly processes, patternmaking, computer-aided pattern drafting, digital illustration, and experimental construction.
Contribute to undergraduate and graduate program development related to apparel product development. Supervise open studio and laboratory work time. Advising undergraduate students.
Outreach & Extension: Develop and lead local, regional, and state outreach opportunities designed to educate the general public and FCS educators regarding clothing construction and repair.
Develop and maintain apparel industry relationships and collaboration opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Masters degree in apparel and textiles or related field.
• Evidence of excellence in classroom teaching at the university level.
• Demonstration of effective teaching in studio and laboratory-based courses related to textiles and apparel design, construction, and repair.
• Ability to provide leadership and coordinate educational programs related to textiles construction and repair to a diverse audience across the lifespan.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively reach and work with diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
• At least 2 years of experience working in the textiles industry and/or established industry relationships.
• Experience with and ability to work on teams.
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator or other vector-based design program.
• Experience with Optitex or other computer-aided patterning software.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
• Must be able to lift and/or otherwise move 30 pounds.
